Objectives

  • Assembling existing data and information on each of the RECARE Case Study sites, including spatial information, as needed by other WPs,
  • Inventory of existing soil degradation assessment methodologies addressing individual soil threats, and selection of the best and most applicable ones for use in RECARE Case Study sites,
  • Development of a harmonized methodology to determine the state of degradation and conservation, that is universally applicable and covering all soil threats,
  • Determining the extent and severity of soil degradation and conservation using the newly developed harmonized methodology,
  • Preparation of degradation and conservation maps for each Case Study area.

Description of Work and role of the partners

Task 3.1: Collecting and organising existing information (Lead partner 2, partners: 12,13,14,15,23 and Case Study partners)

Based on the related data needs identified in WP2 and other work packages, all existing relevant information will be collected by the respective Case Study site partners. All WPs will be consulted in this process to ensure that WP data needs are covered in the best way possible. The information to be collected includes literature (scientific and socio-economic), data, maps, and regional information that can be obtained from field measurements, remote sensing images, and/or statistical sources, all to be critically reviewed. The information collected from Case Studies will be organised in a common geographic database in collaboration with the Data Management WP (WP10) that will be made available to all project partners. Results from Task 3.1 will be summarised in Case Study descriptions, providing all existing relevant information about the Case Studies to all WPs in a standardised format. Case Study descriptions will include bio-physical, socio-economic and political contexts.

Task 3.2: Inventory of existing assessment methodologies for individual soil threats (Lead partner 2, partners: Case Study Partners)

An inventory will be made about existing assessment methodologies to determine the state of degradation for individual soil threats. Based on expert-opinion and extensive literature reviews, the best applicable assessment methodology per soil threat will be selected for use in respective Case Study sites. Results of these applications will form the basis of validating results obtained with the newly developed harmonized assessment methodology applicable for all soil threats (see Task 3.3).

Task 3.3: Development of a harmonized universal methodology to assess the state of soil degradation and conservation, accounting for all soil threats (Lead partner 12, partners: Case Study partners)

The WOCAT mapping tool will be used to spatially assess the degree of soil degradation and thus conservation efforts will be improved and extended from addressing soil erosion, salinization and desertification threats to cover other threats including soil compaction, floods and landslides, organic matter decline, soil sealing, contamination and loss of soil biodiversity. For this purpose, WOCAT mapping questionnaires will be extended, and supplemented by assessment in the field and by consulting stakeholders (in collaboration with WP4). WOCAT questionnaire data will be supplemented by factorial assessment using measured data, indicators and/or expert judgment. This process results in maps of each study site that indicate the severity of soil threats and the effectiveness of prevention or mitigation measures, and thus indicate where action would be equired. In addition, WP6 can use these maps to find suitable locations for monitoring and demonstration.

Task 3.4: Preparation of degradation and conservation maps for each Case Study, including validation (Lead partner 12, partners: Case Study partners)

The improved WOCAT mapping methodology will applied in each of the RECARE Case Study sites to derive maps of the actual state of degradation and conservation in these areas. Results will be compared for validation purposes with results obtained by application of the soil threat specific assessment methodologies (see Task 3.2), and fine-tuned, if needed.

WP2 provides information on data requirements, including methods to be used. WP3 collaborates with WP4

for stakeholder collaboration and related data. WP3 provides information on the state of degradation and conservation in each Case Study, which is of further use to WP5, 6 and 7. WP3 will also provide spatial data that WP6 will use to select monitoring and demonstration sites. WP3 provides input for modelling in WP7 and WP8, and WP3 will instruct WP6 and 7 regarding data needs to assess the effectiveness of measures on soil threats
(WP6) and on ecosystem services (WP7).

WP2 links to RECARE WPs 3 to 8 as it provides the base for collection of soil degradation related field information using harmonized procedures and methods. WP2 uses information provided by WP9 and WP11 to deal with socio-economic and political drivers of soil degradation, and information on current assessments at European scale from WP10.
